Memorial Plaques for World War I - Galveston, Texas

In 1928, the Woman's Civic League and the Women's Auxiliary Argonne Post #20 American Legion developed a project to place Memorial Plaques for the World War 1 military men from Galveston County, who died in the service of their County. The plaques were planned to be placed on Broadway, starting at 21st Street and moving on West as far as 40th Street. The oleanders were to be removed and an oak tree planted with a plaque placed under the tree as a dedication for each individual person. The live oak trees where planted for five blocks along the Broadway esplanade, but the project was met with such strong resistance of moving the oleanders, the City decided to abandon the endeavor. Some years ago, the esplanade was narrowed, and some of the plaques from 21st to 27th street were found, and reset. Not all of the men that served had plaques placed for them, but we did find some of the names. There were four lists of information that was found in the files of Rosenberg Library. Since the lists varied in spelling, and each list was a little different, all four lists are shown below. Please send any additional information and corrections to me.
