BEST, WM. – GALVESTON - At half past four o'clock yesterday afternoon Captain Wm. Best of the Steam Lighter S. T. Maddox died at his residence in this city. His last hours were attended by the loving watchfulness of a devoted wife and a son and a daughter. Captain Best was but 48 years of age and had spent most of his life in this city. He went to Burditt Wells a short time ago and while there was stricken with apoplexy. He was brought home on Thursday last but never recovered from the stroke. In all the range of the Port there could not be found a better man than was William Best. In whatsoever place he was put in he was the master of his situation and faithful to his trust. Living he had friends at every turn and dying they all shed tears of sorrow to the memory of a man who was worth calling friend. And who in death does not lost the love won by his generous broad and kindly nature when alive. Galveston Daily News - Galveston, Texas, September 5, 1882 - Submitted by Floyd "Lanny" Martin.

BEST, CAPT. LOUIS – GALVESTON - A confederate Veteran of this City Died Yesterday. Capt. Louis Best, an old citizen of Galveston and a Confederate veteran died yesterday.
The following sketch of Capt. Best and tribute to his memory is furnished by adjutant Thomas H. Edgar of Camp Magruder, United Confederate Veterans. Taps has again sounded among the members of Camp Magruder. Comrade Louis Best departed this life March 14 at 1:50 a.m., aged 67 years. He was born July 8, 1839 in Nassau, Germany, emigrated with his father to this country and landed in Galveston Jan. 1, 1845. At the age of 17 years he was appointed pilot and served as such until 1861, when he enlisted in Company A, Brown's Battalion of Texas Cavalry, Confederate
States Army. After serving a short time he was transferred to the Texas Marine Department and appointed pilot on river steamboats, and served as such until the close of the war, April 2, 1865. At the surrender of the Confederate army and navy, 1865, he was immediately appointed bar pilot. Though still a member of the Pilots' Association until the time of his death, last August, on account of failing health, he retired from active work. He was well known and had many friends on the southern border of the state from the Sabine to the Rio Grande and will be missed by a host of friends. Captain Best was of a sociable and numbered his friends in our city by the thousands. He leaves surviving him a widow and five children--Joe Best, his son; Misses Maggie, Annie and Arcadia Best and nine grandchildren.
The funeral will take place from his residence, southeast corner of Thirteenth and Church Streets today at 9 a.m. The members of Camp Magruder No. 105 U.V.C. will meet at his residence at 8:40 a.m.
The following will act as pallbearers: Peter Stewart, Henry J. Elbert, J. M. O. Menard, Frank Boddek, Charles Engelke, Emil Leinbach, John Maurer, Leo Nichsis.

Why weep ye, then for him, who having won
The bounds of man's appointed years, at last
Life's blessings all enjoyed, life's labors done,
Serenely to his final rest has passed,
While the soft memory of his virtues yet
Lingers like twilight hues, when the bright sun is set.
His youth was innocent, his riper age
Marked with some act of goodness every day,
And watched by eyes that loved him calm and sage
Faded his declining years away,
Cheerful, he gave his being up, and went to Share the
Holy rest that waits a life well spent.
